Alcohol-Free or 3.5%? How to Choose Your Drink

More of us are thinking about what is in our glass. Some evenings call for something with no alcohol at all; others for something light and celebratory. Here is a plain guide to the labels, and to choosing between our two alcohol-free and botanical drinks.

What the labels mean

Drinks labels can be confusing, and the rules differ by country. In the UK, the commonly used guidance is:

  • Alcohol-free: no more than 0.05% alcohol by volume (ABV).
  • De-alcoholised: alcohol removed, no more than 0.5% ABV.
  • Low alcohol: no more than 1.2% ABV.

Anything above that is simply an alcoholic drink, whatever its strength. That is why we describe CHILL as a light 3.5% ABV drink and never as "low alcohol". In Nigeria, always check the label for the ABV and the NAFDAC number.

CALM: alcohol-free botanical

CALM is Yuzu & Elderflower at 0.0% alcohol. Yuzu brings a bright, fragrant citrus note; elderflower adds a soft, honeyed floral finish. It is for the evenings when you want something considered in your hand and a clear head in the morning: after work, at a dinner where you are driving, or simply because you prefer not to drink.

CHILL: light, fermented, 3.5%

CHILL is Hibiscus & Ginger Zest, naturally fermented to 3.5% ABV. Tart hibiscus meets the warmth of ginger, with a gentle sparkle. It is made for celebrations, weekend gatherings and the long, slow start to an evening.

How to choose

Ask yourself three questions:

  • Do I want any alcohol tonight? If not, CALM.
  • Am I driving, working or looking after others? Choose CALM.
  • Is this a celebration with friends, over 18, taken slowly? CHILL fits.

Many people keep both in the fridge and decide on the night.

Serve them well

Both drinks are best properly cold. Pour into a chilled glass with plenty of ice, add a twist of citrus peel to CALM or a thin slice of ginger to CHILL, and give the can a turn in your hand first: the engraving and raised lettering are made to be felt. After dark, the engraving on both cans glows a soft seafoam.
